Layālī (ليالي) is a style of unmetered modal improvisation, based on amaqam, performed by a singing voice inArabic music. It is similar to thetaqsim, which is performed by a solo instrument.
Thelayali generally serves as an introduction to amawwāl. In thelayali, the singer most often improvises using the commonArabic phrase "Yā ‘ayn yā layl" (يا عين يا ليل), which means "O eye, O night."
The termlayālī is the plural form of the wordlayl (ليل, meaning "night").
