TheLaunceston Tornadoes are an Australianbasketball team based inLaunceston, Tasmania. The Tornadoes compete in the Women'sNBL1 South and play their home games atElphin Sports Centre.[1] For sponsorship reasons, they are known as theSee Eyecare Launceston Tornadoes.
The Launceston Tornadoes Basketball Club Inc was established in 1993.[2] The Tornadoes women's basketball team debuted in theSouth East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) in 1994.[3][4] In their second season, the Tornadoes won the 1995SEABL championship.[5][6][7] They went on to win the 1995ABA National championship.[8][9][10][11] In 1996, the Tornadoes finished as ABA National runners-up.[8]
In 2010 and 2018, the Tornadoes finished as SEABL runners-up.[12][13]
In 2019, following the demise of the SEABL, the Tornadoes joined theNBL1 South.[14]
In September 2025, it was announced that a newly established Northern Tasmania Basketball Club would enter the2026 NBL1 season with a men's and women's program, replacing the Tornadoes women andNorth-West Tasmania Thunder men.[15][16]
DANDENONG Rangers playing-coach Larissa Anderson praised her charges for their "amazing heart" in Saturday night's SEABL championship win over Launceston. The Lady Rangers lifted the SEABL women's trophy for just the second time after a 85-70 victory at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Dominant performances from Gabrielle Richards and Kelly Wilson have helped the Lady Braves to the 2018 SEABL Championship despite 16 threes from Launceston. Bendigo prevailed 119-96 in a high scoring contest, with both teams shooting over 50% from the field.
