Lates longispinis, also known as theRudolf lates orTurkana perch, is a species oflatid fish that isendemic toLake Turkana (formerly known as Lake Rudolf) inKenya andEthiopia.[2] It grows to 57 centimetres (22 in) in length.[2]Lates longispinis is important tocommercial fisheries and is also known as agamefish. It is not known to exist in theaquarium fish trade.
Little is known about its status, and consequently theIUCN classifies it asData Deficient, but according to Kenya's fisheries department the numbers are rising.[1]
The Rudolf lates lives in the deeper waters of the lake, eatingprawns off the bottom of thelakes and feeding onschoolingcharacins in the mid-water column.[1]
Not much is known about thebreeding habits ofL. longispinis. It spawns in the open water in the middle of the lake, andparental care is highly unlikely. Theeggs andfry are believed to bepelagic.[1]
