Lars Sven "Lasse"Hallström (Swedish:[ˈlâsːɛˈhâlːstrœm]; born 2 June 1946) is a Swedish film director. He first became known for directing almost all music videos by thepop groupABBA, and came to international attention with his 1985 feature filmMy Life as a Dog, for which he was nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Director. He is also known forWhat's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993),The Cider House Rules (1999), andChocolat (2000).
Lars Sven "Lasse" Hallström[1] was born on 2 June 1946 inStockholm, Sweden.[2][3][4][5] His father was a dentist[6] and keen amateur videographer; his mother was the author and poet Karin Lyberg.[7]
He attendedAdolf Fredrik's Music School in Stockholm,[8] where he made his firstmusic video[7] and8 mm films.[9]

In the late 1960s, Hallström worked as a director of short pop music clips atSveriges Television.[9]
He made his directorial debut in 1973, directing the comedy seriesPappas pojkar for Swedish TV. He frequently collaborated with comic actorsMagnus Härenstam andBrasse Brännström during his Swedish period.
Between 1974 and 1982, Hallström worked with the Swedish groupABBA on many of their music videos[9] and also directed their 1977 filmABBA: The Movie. Almost all of ABBA's promotional films were directed and shot by Hallström, with only seven exceptions: "When I Kissed the Teacher" (1977); "Chiquitita" (1979), which was made by theBBC; "I Have a Dream" (1979); "On and On and On" (1980); "Lay All Your Love on Me" (1981); "The Day Before You Came" (1982), and "Under Attack" (1982), the latter two being directed byKjell Sundvall and Kjell-Åke Andersson.
After the international success ofMy Life as a Dog (1985), Hallström started working inHollywood. His first English-language film wasOnce Around (1991). His first notable English-language success wasWhat's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), starringJohnny Depp andLeonardo DiCaprio.
Hallström made a number of successful film adaptations from novels. In 1999,The Cider House Rules was released. He followed that success the following year by directingChocolat, starring Johnny Depp,Juliette Binoche, andJudi Dench, which was a critical and box-office success. His 2001 filmThe Shipping News was adapted from aPulitzer Prize-winning novel byE. Annie Proulx and starredKevin Spacey,Judi Dench,Julianne Moore, andCate Blanchett.
His 2011 filmSalmon Fishing in the Yemen, based on the2007 novel of the same name byPaul Torday and starredEwan McGregor andEmily Blunt.
His 2017 film,A Dog's Purpose, based on the2010 novel of the same name, was billed as "a celebration of the special connection between humans and their dogs".[10]
Hallström directed andexecutive produced the 2024 American-IcelandicNordic Noir thriller television seriesThe Darkness, starring his wifeLena Olin, who has collaborated with him on other films.[11]
