Larry Pine (born March 3, 1945) is an American actor.
A veteran of the Broadway stage, he began his career playing the role of Fop in the 1968 production ofCyrano de Bergerac. He has since starred in film and television, with recurring roles in television shows such asAs the World Turns,One Life to Live,All My Children,Hostages,House of Cards, andSuccession. He has also appeared in films such asVanya on 42nd Street (1994) for which he was nominated for theIndependent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male,Tim Robbins'sDead Man Walking (1995),Before and After (1996),Maid in Manhattan (2002),Woody Allen'sMelinda and Melinda (2004), andWes Anderson'sThe Royal Tenenbaums (2001),Moonrise Kingdom (2012),The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), andThe French Dispatch (2021).
Pine began his professional acting careerOff-Broadway, then in 1968 appeared as Fop inCyrano de Bergerac at theVivian Beaumont Theater.[1] A founding member of the avant-garde theater company the Manhattan Project, he appeared in its 1968 production ofAlice in Wonderland, directed byAndre Gregory.[2]
In 1978, he made his film debut inJames Ivory'sHullabaloo Over Georgie and Bonnie's Pictures, which was made for television but later released theatrically.[citation needed] Since then, he has performed inLouis Malle'sVanya on 42nd Street[3] andWoody Allen'sCelebrity,Small Time Crooks,[4] andMelinda and Melinda,[5] among other films. Pine appears in the bookAre You Dave Gorman? as the first actor the writer encounters to have played a fictional Dave Gorman (inThe Ice Storm).[citation needed] In bothThe Royal Tenenbaums andThe Door in the Floor, he appears as aCharlie Rose-type interviewer, conducting a one-on-one interview in a dark studio.[6] From 1997 to 1999, Pine portrayed Barry Shire onAll My Children.[7]
Pine was born in Tucson, Arizona. He received aBachelor of Arts degree from theUniversity of North Texas,[8] and went on to graduate fromNew York University'sTisch School of the Arts in 1968 with aMaster of Fine Arts degree.[9] Since 1969, he has been married to composer and sound designer Margaret Pine (née Rachlin). The couple have one son, Jacob (born 1972).
