Larry Hochman (/ˈhɒkmən/; born November 21, 1953) is an Americanorchestrator andcomposer. He has won fourEmmy Awards for his original music on theTV seriesWonder Pets![2] and a Tony Award for his orchestrations forThe Book of Mormon.[3]
He studiedmusic theory andcomposition atManhattan School of Music,Eastman School of Music, andMannes College of Music.[4]
Hochman's musicalOne Man Band, for which he wrote the score with Marc Elliot, was producedoff-Broadway in 1985, and was later staged at theCoconut Grove Playhouse inFlorida.[5]The New York Times reviewer wrote, "The 10 musical numbers, written by Marc Elliot and Larry Hochman, and Mr. Elliot's lyrics for the songs, move the story along and provide some good comic effects...[there are] some old-fashioned songs in the show that you find yourself humming afterward, and a few stay with you a long time."[6]
In 1987, Hochman worked on the short-livedBroadwaystage musicalLate Nite Comic as orchestrator and musical arranger.[7] Though his arrangements were not recorded on thecast recording in March 1988,[8] they are heard on the 25th Anniversary recording. Hochman has provided additional orchestrations for the Broadway musicalsThe Little Mermaid,Prince of Central Park,[9] andThe Music Man, among others. He served as orchestrator forSpamalot, which garnered him aTony Award[10] nomination forBest Orchestrations, as didA Class Act in 2001 and the 2004 revival ofFiddler on the Roof.
Working with Danny Troob, he composed additional music forDisney'sLittle Mermaid II. Hochman has composed and arranged music for two episodes ofSteven Spielberg'sAmazing Stories, theTVdocumentariesViews of a Vanishing Frontier andYad Vashem, and the filmsNot for Publication,The Watchman, andAlaska: Spirit of the Wild.[4] He also co-orchestrated (with John DuPrez) the comic oratorioNot the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy) forEric Idle andJohn Du Prez.
His musical adaptation ofGaston Leroux's 1910 novelThe Phantom of the Opera (not to be confused withAndrew Lloyd Webber'sstage version) touredNorth America in 1990, receiving positive reviews.[4] In 1996, Hochman wrote "A Sondheim Medley", which was later authorized by Mr. Sondheim.[4] Hochman's song, "Rising Like The Sun", was performed at the opening ceremony forAmerica's Millennium in Washington, DC.[4]
He provided orchestrations for the 2004 premiere ofFrank Loesser'sSeñor Discretion Himself at theArena Stage in Washington, DC.[11] Hochman also orchestratedMarvin Hamlisch's score for the2009 filmThe Informant!. Hochman has arranged music for concerts forPaul McCartney,Eric Idle,Mandy Patinkin,Stephen Sondheim,Audra McDonald,Brian Stokes Mitchell,Barry Manilow,Maury Yeston,Marvin Hamlisch,Hugh Jackman,Betty Buckley,Marin Mazzie &Jason Danieley, theBoston Pops Orchestra, theSan Francisco Symphony Orchestra and theNew York Philharmonic.[12]
In 2010, Hochman provided orchestrations for the musicalsThe Addams Family andThe Scottsboro Boys and the video gameSonic Colors.[13][14][15][16] Later projects includeThe Book of Mormon (for which Hochman wonTony andDrama Desk Awards),[17][18] andDeath Takes A Holiday (the 2011 musical byMaury Yeston,Peter Stone andTom Meehan).[19] In 2014, Hochman orchestrated the Colombian musicalPor siempre Navidad byMaría Isabel Murillo,Misi. It was directed by British choreographer and directorMitch Sebastian and repeated in 2015 due to its enormous success.[citation needed] In 2022, he orchestratedMaury Yeston'sDecember Songs, which was recorded byVictoria Clark.[20]
He resides inFair Lawn, New Jersey, with his wife, Diane, twins Brian and Sarah, and daughter Laurie.[21]
