Lara Comi (born 18 February 1983) is an Italian politician, member of theEuropean Parliament from 2009 to 2019, and again since 2022.
Lara Comi received a bachelor's degree in economics in 2005 fromUniversità Cattolica del Sacro Cuore inMilan.[citation needed] In 2007 she earned a master's in economics fromUniversità Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, also in Milan.[citation needed]
She held internships at theUruguayan consulate in Italy andBeiersdorf Italy, and was a brand manager forGiochi Preziosi.[1]
In theseventh European Parliament she was a member of the delegations for relations with Afghanistan (2009–10) and Latin America (2010–14), the delegation to the EU–Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee (2010–14), and theCommittee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (2012–14).[2]
As of 16 November 2013, with the dissolution of the People of Freedom, she is a member of the re-formedForza Italia.[3]
In theEuropean election of 2014, Comi retained her seat in North-West Italy, this time with 83,987 votes. She was chosen as vice-president of theEuropean People's Party group for theeighth European Parliament.[4] She serves on the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the delegation for relations with theUnited States.[5]
Lara Comi hired her mother as personal assistant at her office in the European Parliament and was sanctioned as a result.[6]
Lara Comi was found guilty of havingdefamed a political rival, alleging he had a "mafia background" and had been found guilty of serious crimes; while she attempted to claim immunity from prosecution as EMP, the judge eventually dismissed her claim and found her guilty.[7]
Lara Comi was sentenced to over 4 years of jail for a bribery scandal[8] in which she previously had over half a million euro seized by authorities.[9]
