Lake Maratanza is the highest lake inNew York'sShawangunk Ridge at 2,245 feet (684 m) above sea level. It is withinSam's Point Preserve.[2]
The lake is dammed and supplies drinking water toEllenville. The outlet brook drains to the other side of the ridge, into theVerkeerder Kill, a tributary of theShawangunk Kill and by extension theWallkill River.
