Labra (Georgian:ლაბრა;Abkhaz:Лабра;Armenian:Լաբրա) is a village inOchamchire District,Abkhazia,Georgia. It is populated predominantly byHamshen Armenians who founded the village in 1890 after emigration fromOrdu in theOttoman Empire.[2]
In February and March 1993, during theGeorgian-Abkhazian war, Labra was looted and destroyed by Georgian forces, who subjected inhabitants to torture, rape and murder.[2][3][4][unreliable source?] These and similar events in other villages convinced the Armenian population ofGagra District, who had resolved to stay neutral, to join the Abkhazian side of the war, forming theBagramyan Battalion.[3][4][unreliable source?]
