
TheLa Honda Creek Open Space Preserve is a publicly accessibleopen space reserve inSan Mateo County, California, part of theMidpeninsula Regional Open Space District.[1]
TheOhlone people were indigenous to this area. In the 1800's the land became part ofRancho San Gregorio, in what was thenMexico.[2]
The preserve contains a number of historic structures and remains, including remains of some of thesawmills used for the logging of the area that began in 1865, a red barn from what was previously a ranch[3], and an historiclog cabin from the 1920s that was removed in 2023.[2]
The preserve was established in 1984, but was closed to the public for years before opening to the public in 2017.[3][1]
The preserve contains several trails open tocycling,horseback riding, andhiking.[4]
Much ofBogess Creek's and some ofLa Honda Creek's watershed is contained within the preserve, which ranges fromredwood forest to grassland.[3]
Some of the preserve is actively used forcattle grazing.[3]
