Leften Stavros Stavrianos (1913 – March 23, 2004) was aGreek-Canadian historian.[1] His most influential books are considered to beA Global History: From Prehistory to the 21st Century andThe Balkans since 1453.[1][2] He was one of the first historians to challengeOrientalist views of theOttoman Empire.

Biography

Stavrianos was born inVancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1913. He received a B.A. in history from theUniversity of British Columbia, and a M.A. and Ph.D. fromClark University inWorcester,Massachusetts.[1]

Stavrianos joined the faculty ofQueen's University inKingston, Ontario andSmith College inNorthampton, Massachusetts.[2] He then became a professor atNorthwestern University in 1946. After retiring from Northwestern in 1973, Stavrianos joined theUniversity of California, San Diego Department of History until 1992.
