Lázaro Jorge Álvarez Estrada (born 28 January 1991) is a Cubanprofessional andamateur boxer. As an amateur, Álvarez won the world title in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He also won gold medals at the 2011, 2015, and 2019 Pan American Games and bronze medals at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympics. He is asouthpaw. His amateur record is currently 213-37, with 15 knockouts.

Amateur career

In the final of2011 World Championships, he beat England'sLuke Campbell after 3 rounds with 14–10 final score.[2][3]

Later that year he also won the2011 Pan American title against MexicanOscar Valdez.[4]

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing at bantamweight, he beat AmericanJoseph Diaz andRobenílson Vieira of Brazil but lost to IrishmanJohn Joe Nevin 14-19 in the semifinal and won bronze. He lost in the final of the Cuban Championships toRobeisy Ramirez.[4]

After 2012, he moved up to lightweight.

Álvarez won the lightweight title at the2013 AIBA World Championships, beatingJoseph Cordina,Fazliddin Gaibnazarov,Saylom Ardee,Berik Abdrakhmanov and, in the final,Robson Donato Conceicao.[4]

In 2014, he won the Cuban title.[4]

At the 2015 Pan American Games, he won gold, beating Elvis Severino Rodriguez, Kevin Luna andLindolfo Delgado along the way.[4] That year, he also won the World Series of Boxing final, against Zakir Safiullin.[4]

He won the bronze medal at themen's lightweight event at the2016 Summer Olympics, losing to Conceicao in the semifinal.[5][6]

Later in 2016 he was suspended from the Cuban national team, suspended from competition for six months, and removed from the list of the best athletes of the year after he died his hair.[7]

At the2019 World Championships, he fought at featherweight, beatingPeter McGrail, before losing toMirazizbek Mirzakhalilov in the final.[8][9]

Álvarez made his professional debut on 20 May 2022, in a bout against Francisco Mercado. He took a clear unanimous decision after six rounds. In the time since Álvarez has had four fights in Mexico and Bolivia in between amateur events.
