Kushan dance orkushan nritya orkushan gaan is aRajbongshi folk drama form based onKrittivasi Ramayan. The artistes narrate the story ofRamayan inKamtapuri orRajbongshi language through musical verses. The Kushan folk theater is traceable to the 15th century when theKoch dynasty ruledAssam,West Bengal, and the current northernBangladesh. The name,Kushan, has its sources in the nameKush, the second son ofSita.[1][2][3]
The men, called assokra orchokra, sing and dance during the performance. The primary performer is known asmool orgeedal - he narrates the story and thedoari, the jester, works as an intermediary between themool and the audience through commentaries, observations, and jokes.Bena, an instrument made of bamboo is used in the performances apart fromaar banshi (bamboo flute),mondira, sarinja, akhrai, violin, and harmonium. The performance starts withashar bandana, an auspicious song to seek the blessings of gods and goddesses.[1][2][3]
