Kurtis Byrne (born 9 April 1990) is an Irish former professionalfootballer who plays forBelgard AFC. He is the son of formerCeltic andSouthend United playerPaul Byrne.[2]
Byrne was a member of theHibernian under-19 side that won the league and cup double in the2008–09 season. He scored the winning goal in both the decisive league match and theYouth Cup Final.[2][3] Byrne was one of seven players in that side who were given professional contracts by Hibs following their success.[4]
Byrne made his professional debut on 26 August 2009 in theScottish League Cup againstBrechin City,[5] and made hisleague debut the following Sunday againstCeltic.
Byrne was loaned toStirling Albion for a month in February 2010.[6]
Byrne was then loaned toEast Fife for the first half of the 2010–11 season.[7] Byrne scored a hat-trick for East Fife in his fourth appearance for the club, a 6–0 win againstDumbarton.[8]
After Hibs suffered from a striker shortage due to the sale ofAnthony Stokes and an injury toDarryl Duffy, managerJohn Hughes commented that Byrne was not yet ready to play regularly in theSPL, and needed to "learn his trade" in lower division football.[9]
Byrne was loaned toAlloa Athletic on 31 March 2011 for the rest of the 2010–11 season.[10] Hibs announced in late April that Byrne would bereleased at the end of the season.[11]
Byrne then signed forRoss County on a one-year contract.[12] He helped the club win the2011–12 Scottish First Division and promotion to the SPL.
Byrne was loaned toBrechin City in September 2012,[13] and was then released byRoss County in December 2012.[14]
Byrne signed forDundalk in January 2013.[15]
Byrne signed for Bohemians in November 2015, the club his father spent most of his career at.
He signed for another of his father's old clubs,St Patrick's Athletic on 9 January 2017.[16]
He then signed forNIFL Premiership sideLinfield.[17]
In June 2018 he joinedThe New Saints of theWelsh Premier League citing a desire to return to full-time football.[18]
Following the conclusion of the 2019-20Welsh Premier League, Kurtis returned to theLeague of Ireland and signed with Premier Division clubWaterford.[19]
After a season atAthlone Town in 2021 andBray Wanderers in 2022, Byrne announced his retirement from professional football in September 2022.[20]
