Kurt Demmler (bornKurt Abramowitsch, 12 September 1943Posen – 3 February 2009Berlin) was a Germansongwriter, who in the earlier part of his life was a dissidentEast German songwriter.[1] Accused of allegedsexual abuse of underage girls during castings for a female pop group, hehanged himself in his Berlin jail cell.
Demmler grew up inCottbus,Brandenburg, in East Germany.[2] He qualified as a doctor in 1969.[2]
He was a well-known dissident lyricist and songwriter for manyGerman rock bands.[3][4] Some of Demmler's compositions, such as “Come Into My Guitar Boat” and “Every Person Can Love Everyone”, were award-winning works.[5]
He was active in the peaceful revolution against the East German communist government, which led to thefall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.[5]
In 2009, Demmler was to stand trial for allegedsexual abuse, stemming from accusations that he molested six underage girls between 1995 and 1999 during castings in hisPrenzlauer Berg district apartment in Berlin for a female pop group.[5][2]
The day of the trial, Demmlerhanged himself in his jail cell in theMoabit district in Berlin.[5][6] He was 65.[2][5]
