Kromdraai Conservancy is a protected conservation park located to the south-west ofGauteng province in north-eastSouth Africa. It is in theMuldersdrift area not far fromKrugersdorp.
Its name is derived fromAfrikaans meaning "Crooked Turn" after a kink in the meanderingCrocodile River.
It was established to protect thecaves, oldgold mines,fossil sites,trout farm and agame reserve in the area. The caves in the area, known as theSterkfontein caves have an extensive number of fossils anddolomitecaverns. A well known fossil site is also namedKromdraai and it, along with such sites asSterkfontein,[1]Coopers,Swartkrans andPlovers Lake form part of the conservancy. Part of the Kromdraai conservancy also falls within theCradle of HumankindWorld Heritage Site, proclaimed byUNESCO in 1998.
