Kristopher Marshall (born 1973) is an English actor. He has playedNick Harper inMy Family, Colin Frissell in the 2003 filmLove Actually, Gratiano inThe Merchant of Venice, andMurder City (2006–2008), andDave in the first series ofCitizen Khan (2012). He played DIHumphrey Goodman inDeath in Paradise from 2014 to 2017 and reprised the role inBeyond Paradise in 2023.
Kristopher Marshall was born in 1973 inBath,Somerset. His father was aRoyal Air Force (RAF) navigator, whose career included a posting to theQueen's Flight, eventually becoming asquadron leader. His parents separated when he was 14.[1][2]
Marshall moved with his family toHong Kong and later toCanada. Upon their return toEngland,UK, he was educated atWells Cathedral School as aboarding pupil. After failing his initialA-levels in his first year ofsixth form,[3] he enrolled at theRedroofs Theatre School inMaidenhead,Berkshire.[2]
Marshall made an early career appearance on the police seriesThe Bill but it was in 2000 that his major breakthrough role came asNick Harper in theBBCsitcomMy Family. In 2003, he appeared in the filmLove Actually as Colin Frissell, anEnglishman who goes toMilwaukee,Wisconsin, in theUS to find love.[citation needed]
In 2004, Marshall appeared as DS Luke Stone in the police drama seriesMurder City. From 2005 to 2011, Marshall appeared on TV and in print forBT Retail adverts, where he played the character Adam; withEsther Hall portraying his character's eventual wife Jane.[4] He also played The Ginger Dave in the BBC comedy seriesCitizen Khan in 2012 but left after season 1.
Since departing his full-time role inMy Family in 2003, Marshall made guest appearances three times appearing in 2 episodes of season five in 2004 and his final appearance in a shortComic Relief special in 2005. He finished working on the filmHeist at the end of 2006, which aired in April 2008 onBBC Four. During the summer of 2008, Marshall appeared atTrafalgar Studios in the first UK run ofNeil LaBute's playFat Pig. He became a regular cast-member, playing the character of Ethan on the seriesTraffic Light in 2011.
In April 2013, it was announced that Marshall would be joining the cast of BBC dramaDeath In Paradise as the island's new lead detective, DIHumphrey Goodman.[5][6] His character was introduced in the first episode of the third series which aired in 2014, with his first case being to solve the murder of his predecessor, DI Richard Poole (played byBen Miller).[7] In January 2017 it was leaked that Marshall would be leaving the series citing the pressures it placed upon his family and that he would be replaced byArdal O'Hanlon who plays DI Jack Mooney.[8]
Marshall starred as Tom Sanger in the 2015 independent British romantic comedySparks & Embers.[9]
Marshall reprised the role of DI Humphrey Goodman fromDeath in Paradise in a BBC spin-offBeyond Paradise, set in SouthDevon, which aired in February 2023.[10]

Marshall was hit by a car inBristol in 2008.[13] The crash happened in the early hours of 28 April as he enjoyed a night out with friends in Bristol city centre. He was taken toBristol Royal Infirmary, where a scan revealedhead injuries.[14] He made a full recovery and began his performances in the playFat Pig three weeks later as scheduled.[15] Marshall passionately supportsAston Villa and said that a card from the club helped him through his recovery.[16]
In October 2011, Marshall was charged with failing to provide abreath test after police stopped his car in theTesco car park inWells, Somerset.[17][18]
Marshall married Hannah when he was 39. As of December 2014 they were living in Bath and had a two-year-old son.[1] He was still resident there in December 2019.[19]
