Krinides (Greek:Κρηνίδες, before 1926: Ράχτσα -Rachtsa[2]) is a town in theKavala regional unit in eastern Macedonia,Greece. It was the seat of the former municipality ofFilippoi. The ruins of the ancient cityPhilippi are close to the town. Krinides is situated at the southwestern foot of theLekanis hills, 13 km northwest ofKavala and 20 km southeast ofDrama. TheGreek National Road 12 betweenDrama andKavala passes west of Krinides.
Krinides was named after the ancient townCrenides. Formerly a possession of the island ofThasos, Crenides was captured by KingPhilip II of Macedon in 356 BC, who expanded and fortified the city and renamed itPhilippi after himself.[3]
