Kozjak (Macedonian:Козјакⓘ) is a mountain situated on the border betweenNorth Macedonia andSerbia. It is situated north-east fromKumanovo. The tallest peak of Kozjak isVirovi at 1284 meters.[1] The region is also known asKozjačija [mk] (Козјачија). The riverPčinja flows along the western edge of the mountain.
During thestruggle for Macedonia, theBalkan Wars andWorld War I, Serbian volunteer detachments fought to liberate the region from Turkish, Albanian and Bulgarian tyranny. InWorld War II Kozjak was occupied byDraža Mihajlović'sChetniks and was a ground of severe battles between them and theMacedonian National Liberation Army at the time supported by theNazi Germany and its Axis collaborators,Bulgaria and theIndependent State of Croatia.
Kozjak is famous for theProhor Pčinjski monastery in which the first session of theASNOM was held on 2 August 1944.
