Kouachra (Arabic:الكواشرة, also spelled asKaweishra orKavashra)[1][2] is a village inAkkar Governorate,Lebanon. It is located approximately 131 kilometres (81 mi) north ofBeirut and 38 kilometres (24 mi) north ofTripoli.[1][3]
Kouachra is located inAkkar District, nearAl Qoubaiyat about an hour's drive from Tripoli. The village is situated on flat terrain at an altitude of 700–800 meters (2,300–2,600 ft) above sea level.[2] The village has a small artificial lake.[4]
Kouachra has a population of about 2,800 people, mostly ofSunniLebanese Turkmen origin.[2][1] And most of its residents are farmers.[5][6] As of 31 December 2022, 1,596 Syrian refugees are registered in the settlement.[7]
The villagers support theFuture Movement political party.[2]
Owing to its Turkish ethnic identity, the village was visited by the President ofTurkey,Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in 2010[8][9] and has received Turkish developmental assistance and funding, including university scholarships in Turkey.[5]
According to one local resident: "AfterOttoman rule ended in Lebanon, we decided to stay on our land. We still maintain ourTurkish language and traditions."[5]
The village also houses several hundredSyrian Turkmen who have fled theSyrian Civil War.[1][10]
