Kothi State was founded in the mid of 16th century by a Baghel Rajput ruler who expelled the formerBharr ruler of the area.[2]

Towards the beginning of the nineteenth century, and in much the same manner as neighbouring Sohawal, Kothi became aBritish protectorate initially subordinate to Panna State. However, a separatesanad was granted toRais Lal Duniyapati Singh in 1810.[2]

The last ruler of Kothi signed theinstrument of accession to theIndian Union on 1 January 1950.[citation needed]
