Kollam MEMU Car Shed is an ISO certifiedmotive power depot facility for maintainingMEMU rakes, situated in the city ofKollam in theIndianstate ofKerala. It is one of the fourMEMU rake maintenance sheds serving theSouthern Railway zone of theIndian Railways.^[1] Kollam MEMU Shed is functioning as the control and coordination center of MEMU trains running through Kerala state.^[2]

MEMU Car sheds inKollam andPalakkad were proposed in 2008's Indian Railway Budget. The first announcedMEMU shed forKerala was inKollam, but the inauguration of this shed was delayed for more than two years due to clearance issues and negligence ofIndian Railways.^[3]Palakkad MEMU Shed inaugurated on 1 January 2011.^[4] The Kollam MEMU Shed was formally commissioned on 1 December 2013, five years after its completion.^[5] In the second half of 2019, the Southern Railway started replacing the traditional rakes with High-speed, three-phase MEMU trains running on Kollam routes.^[6] As the first step, a three-phase MEMU train with 8 coaches started service onKollam Junction-Ernakulam Junction-Kollam Junction route from September 2, 2019.^[7]

The MEMU Car Shed inKollam currently conducts periodic overhauling activities for two different types of rakes manufactured byICF, Chennai:

• Generation I rakes
• 3-phase 8 coach rake(Total capacity: 2,402 passengers)^[8]

Presently, 9 pairs ofMEMU services are operated from/toKollam Junction. The maintenance works of those rakes are regularly being done inKollamMEMU shed.
