TheKollam City Police is the law enforcement agency concerned with the maintenance of law and order in the Indian city ofKollam and the municipalities ofKarunagappalli (Karunagappally division) andParavur(Chathannoor division) along with several towns in Kollam district.[4][5] Kollam City Police is the firstISO 9001 certified law enforcement agency inKerala state and second one inIndia. The Kollam City Police has about 2,200 officers and handles an average of 35000 cases per year.[6][7]

History

In the pre-independence era,Kerala was divided into princely states ofTravancore andCochin and theMalabar region for the smooth administration. There was no Commissionerate inKollam until 2011. The whole district police was administered byDySP ofKollam,Karunagappally,Kottarakkara andPunalur. As per the Government Order no 32/2011/Home dated 5 February 2011, Kollam district police was divided into Kollam Urban Police District (Kollam City Police) and Kollam Rural Police District. The City Police is headed by a City Police Commissioner(CP), with its headquarters atKollam. The Police Commissioner holds the rank ofSuperintendent of Police (SP) and is from the IPS cadre. The rural police is headed by the District Police Chief (DPC), with its headquarters atKottarakkara. Both heads report to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), Thiruvananthapuram Range (Kerala).[8] The Kollam City Police came into existence on 1 March 2011 following the division of theKollam District Police force into the Kollam City Police and theKollam Rural Police.

The office of the Kollam's City Police Commissioner is situated near the Armed Reserve Police Force camp inKollam Cantonment.

There are a total of 17 police stations under the control of Kollam City Police, eight of which are under the control of the Kollam Division with five further stations underChathannoor division and three underKarunagappally division.[9][10][11]

The Office is presently headed by Smt. Kiran Narayanan IPS,[a] Commissioner of Police, who is anIndian Police Service (IPS) officer, as administrative control vests with theHome Ministry ofKerala.

Developments

  • A dedicated complex atAsramam for the district police dog squad was inaugurated by Harshita Attaluri, the then Superintendent of Police on 2 March 2010. The facility cost7 lakh (US$8,300) and can accommodate four dogs. The dog squad currently consists of three dogs.[18] On 3 November 2016, a 10-member team of anti-goonda squad has been formed in Kollam city police. The team will supposedly be headed by a sub inspector.[19]
  • On 2 February 2021, Kerala's first district forensic science laboratory started functioning atChathannoor inKollam district. Physics, Biology and Chemistry, divisions started initially and a cyber forensic division will also be started in the lab shortly.[20]

The first ISO 9001 accredited School in Kollam District, Kerala is Kalima International school .This Educational Institution located at Oyoor Roaduvila,Near Travancore Engineering College.
