Knut Friedrich Alexander Abraham (born 4 June 1966) is a German diplomat and politician of theChristian Democratic Union (CDU) who has been serving as aMember of the German Bundestag since 2021.[1]
In addition to his parliamentary work, Abraham has been serving as Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation at theFederal Foreign Office in thecoalition government ofChancellorFriedrich Merz since 2025.[2]
Abraham was born and raised inHamburg. After graduating from theHansa-Gymnasium inBergedorf in 1985, he was a contract soldier in theNATO integrated service inBrunssum until 1987. He then studiedlaw at theRheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and passed his first state examination inlaw at theDüsseldorf Higher Regional Court in 1993. After completing his legal clerkship at theBerlinCourt of Appeal, he passed his second state examination in law there in 1998.
From 1987 to 1996 Abraham served as office manager forOtto von Habsburg inBonn andBerlin. He was also hisparliamentary assistant at theEuropean Parliament inBrussels from 1994.
Abraham then attended the Federal Foreign Office's training center and had his first posting at the GermanEmbassy inHelsinki in the summer of 1999, where he passed Career Examination 1. From 2000 to 2003 he was FirstSecretary of the German Embassy inSofia. He then moved to theForeign Office as aconsultant in theNATO department until 2005. He then worked as a consultant in theparliamentary andcabinet departments and went to theFederal Chancellery in 2006 as deputy head of the department forglobal issues.
In 2011 he was appointed Consul-General and Head of the Legal and Consular Department at the German Embassy inWashington. During this time he also regularly visitedJens Soering, a German citizen who had been imprisoned in theUnited States for many years.[3]

Abraham was a member ofYoung Union before joining the CDU in 1985.
In2009,2014 and2019 Abraham ran unsuccessfully for theEuropean Parliament.[4]
In the2021 German federal election Abraham contestedElbe-Elster – Oberspreewald-Lausitz II, but was elected to the20th German Bundestag via the state list.[5] In parliament, he has since been serving on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and theCommittee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid.[6]
In addition to his committee assignments, Abraham is a member of the German delegation to theParliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). In the Assembly, he serves on the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.[7]
In the negotiations to form aGrand Coalition under the leadership ofFriedrich Merz's Christian Democrats (CDU together with the BavarianCSU) and theSPD following the2025 German elections, Abraham was part of the CDU/CSU delegation in the working group on European affairs, led byPatricia Lips,Alexander Radwan andKatarina Barley.[8]
Abraham lives inSchönewalde, in the district of Dubro. He has five children and has been married to his wife Marion since 1996. He is of Evangelical Lutheran denomination.[9]
