Knoephla, also spelledknephla/ˈnɛflə/, is a type ofdumpling, commonly used insoups in theUnited States. The word is related to the modernGerman dialect wordKnöpfle, meaninglittle knob/button. Traditionalknoephla soup is a thick chicken and potatosoup, almost to the point of being astew. It is particularly common in the U.S. states ofMinnesota,South Dakota, andNorth Dakota, where there was significant settlement ofGerman emigrants from the Russian Empire. There are different iterations known throughout, though the North Dakotan iteration typically contains just potatoes and dumplings.
