Christopher William Young (born 1994) is a British actor. He began his career in theatre, earning anIan Charleson Award nomination. On television, he starred as Jesper Fahey in theNetflix fantasy seriesShadow and Bone (2021–2023). He won aScottish BAFTA for his performance in the horror filmOut of Darkness (2022). His other films includeThe School for Good and Evil (2022).

Early life and education

Young was born inOxford to a Scottish father and a Ugandan mother and raised inAbingdon-on-Thames.[1] He attendedAbingdon School from 2008 to 2013; he was a member of theAbingdon Film Unit and played the lead role in the school's 2012 senior production ofCandide.[2][3][4]

Young was a member of theNational Youth Theatre.[5] He had a few minor and ensemble roles, such as in the television filmWalter's War and theOxford Playhouse productions ofCinderella andDick Whittington.[6] He went on to train at theRoyal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating with aBachelor of Arts in Acting in 2017.[3][7]

Career

Post graduation fromRADA, Young played the lead inThe Extraordinary Cabaret of Dorian Gray at the 2017 Underbelly Theatre Festival inSouth Bank. He also joined the UK tour ofThe Real Thing as Billy.[8][9] In 2018, he playedOctavius in a production ofJulius Caesar at theBridge Theatre,[10] the Journalist in a production ofThe Prime of Miss Jean Brodie atDonmar Warehouse,[11] and Malcolm inMacbeth at theSam Wanamaker Playhouse at theGlobe Theatre.[12]

Young made his television debut in 2019 with a guest role inEndeavour. He also appeared in theDylan Holmes Williams directed shortThe Devil's Harmony.[13] That spring and summer, he playedLysander inA Midsummer Night's Dream atBridge Theatre alongsideGwendoline Christie,[14] which earned him anIan Charleson Award nomination.[15]

In October 2019, it was announced Young would star as Jesper Fahey the 2021Netflix seriesShadow and Bone, an adaptation of fantasy book seriesThe Grisha Trilogy and theSix of Crows Duology byLeigh Bardugo.[16][17] His performance was singled out by several publications.[18][19][20][21][22] The series was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons.[23] In 2022, he starred in the horror filmThe Origin (laterOut of Darkness) and appeared in the Netflix film adaptation ofThe School for Good and Evil.[24][25]

Young is currently starring in the 2025FX on Hulu seriesAlien: Earth. Also in 2025, he is starring as George Knightley opposite Amelia Kenworthy inAva Pickett's stage adaptation ofEmma at theRose Theatre, Kingston.[26]
