King is a 1978 Americantelevision miniseries written and directed byAbby Mann , based on the life ofMartin Luther King Jr. , the Americancivil rights leader. It aired for three consecutive nights onNBC from February 12 through 14, 1978.
Several real-life figures from theCivil Rights Movement had minor roles in the production, including then-Atlanta mayorMaynard Jackson , King's sisterChristine King Farris , his nieceAlveda King , and his four children:Yolanda ,Martin III ,Dexter andBernice .Donzaleigh Abernathy ,Tony Bennett ,Julian Bond andRamsey Clark each portrayed themselves.
The miniseries earned nineEmmy Award nominations, including nominations for actorsPaul Winfield ,Cicely Tyson andOssie Davis .

The miniseries was released on DVD on January 11, 2005.
