Kimitoön (Swedish:[t̠ʃimitoøːn];Finnish:Kemiönsaari;Finnish:[ˈkemiønˌsɑːri]) is amunicipality andisland ofFinland. It was created on 1 January 2009, when the municipalities ofDragsfjärd,Kimito andVästanfjärd were consolidated into a single municipality. The former municipal councils accepted the merger on 26 June 2007.[5]
The municipality is located in theArchipelago Sea in theSouthwest Finlandregion. The municipality has a population of 6,365 (30 June 2025)[2] and covers an area of 2,800.99 square kilometres (1,081.47 sq mi) of which 2,113.94 km2 (816.20 sq mi) is water.[1] Thepopulation density is 9.27 inhabitants per square kilometre (24.0/sq mi). The actual island is the largest coastal island ofFinland with an area of 524 square kilometres (202 sq mi). It is situated in theSouthwest Finland region inWestern Finland province. The island has a population of 7,500 divided between the two municipalities: Kimitoön andSalo of which Salo is mostly located on the mainland.
Kimitoön is abilingual municipality withFinnish andSwedish as its official languages. The population consists of30% Finnish speakers,66% Swedish speakers, and4% speakers of other languages.
