Early life and family

[edit]

Kieran Kyle Culkin was born on September 30, 1982, in the borough ofManhattan,New York City,New York.[2] He was the fourth of seven children born toChristopher "Kit" Culkin and Patricia Brentrup.[3] His father is a former stage actor, and his mother, a native ofNorth Dakota, worked as a road traffic controller inSundance, Wyoming.[4] Culkin was raisedCatholic with his six siblings:[5] Shane (b. 1976), Dakota (1978–2008),[6]Macaulay (b. 1980), Quinn (b. 1984), Christian (b. 1987), andRory (b. 1989).[3] He had an older half-sister, Jennifer Adamson (1970–2000), from his father's previous relationship.[7][8] ActressBonnie Bedelia is his paternal aunt.[9] Culkin has German, Irish, and Norwegian ancestry.[10][11]

For the first nine years of his life, Culkin and his family lived in a railroad apartment inYorkville and struggled financially.[3][12] The tenement was "barely suitable for a couple," Culkin explained toVanity Fair. "It was just a hallway, and there were no separating doors, except for the bathroom, which didn't have a lock. [His parents] raised seven kids in that apartment—for years! They just kept bringing babies home to this little space."[13] Because his father served as asacristan at theSt. Joseph's Church of Yorkville, Culkin attended itsCatholic school for free until the third grade.[4][2] He then studied theater, film and television at theProfessional Children's School, but dropped out during his senior year of high school.[14][15]

Culkin was "loved unconditionally" by his mother,[4] and considers her to be his only parent.[16][17] He was neglected by his father throughout his childhood and only remembers him as being a "constant, unwelcome presence" in the household.[4] His mother handled all of the children's necessities while balancing night shifts as a telephone operator for atheatrical casting agency.[4] According to the family's longtime talent manager,Emily Gerson Saines, his mother maintained "strong family values, like the family having a meal together, the Christmas tree, Thanksgiving. These are all important things to [Brentrup], and she instilled that in her kids."[13] After living together for more than twenty years, Culkin's parents separated in March 1995.[a][18] Brentrup was awardedsole custody of five of their seven children following a two-year, highly publicized custody battle.[b][20][19] Culkin maintained a "great" relationship with his mother, but has been estranged from his father since.[13]

Career

[edit]

1988–1995: Early work

[edit]

Culkin was raised as a performer and started acting at the age of two.[21] Some of his earliest memories involve being led by his father's hand intoCentral Park and posing forheadshots.[4] His career began when a stage manager who worked for theLight Opera of Manhattan, anoff-Broadwayrepertory theatre, heard the company needed some children for their productions.[13] The manager relayed the message to Culkin's parents, who offered their children with no hesitation.[4] Culkin started auditioning for roles with his older siblings when he was six years old.[4] His first professional gig was through a television commercial based on learning disabilities;[22] he was repeatedly berated by the unnamed director in a failed attempt to make himmethod act.[23]

At age seven, Culkin made his feature film debut as Fuller McCallister, the youngest cousin of the protagonist Kevin McCallister (played by his brotherMacaulay), in the Christmas comedyHome Alone (1990).[24] He had "no idea" what the film was about while he was filming; the only notes he received from the filmmakers was, "Drink thisCoke, wear the glasses, say the thing you memorized, look cute, and go home."[25][26]Devin Ratray, who played Buzz McCallister, successfully convinced Culkin to believe that the film was actually about his character.[25]Home Alone was originally met with mixed-to-positive reviews from critics.[27] Culkin's small role was deemed memorable for itsPepsiproduct placement and bedwetting tendencies.[28]Home Alone later became thesecond highest-grossing Christmas film of all time,[29] and was hailed as a Christmas classic.[30][31]

In 1991, Culkin had minor roles in the romantic comediesOnly the Lonely, which received mixed reviews,[32] andFather of the Bride, which earned positive reviews.[33] He was nominated for aYoung Artist Award for Best Young Actor Co-Starring in a Motion Picture for his performance in the latter.[34] Culkin reprised his role as Fuller McCallister inHome Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), the poorly received sequel toHome Alone.[35] His later appearances inNowhere to Run (1993),[36]My Summer Story (1994),[37] andFather of the Bride Part II (1995) also received negative-to-mixed reviews.[38]

1996–2002: Breakthrough withIgby Goes Down

[edit]

Culkin alternated between lead roles inindependent films and small parts in mainstream films as he entered adolescence. In 1996, he starred as a farm boy who overcomes his fear of animals inBobby Roth'sAmanda and was a guest caller on thefourth season of the television sitcomFrasier.[39][40] He then starred as a boy suffering fromMorquio syndrome in the coming-of-age filmThe Mighty (1998), which earned him a nomination for theYoung Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actor in a Feature Film.[41][42]Peter Chelsom, its director, was the first filmmaker that treated Culkin like a serious actor: "He talked to me like an adult. Before that, directors would just tell me what to do. I’d have no input. But [Chelsom] taught me how to study my lines and take them apart and how to dissect my character. I had no idea there was a real process to acting before that."[43]

The following year, Culkin appeared inWes Craven'sMusic of the Heart, a biographical film about violinistRoberta Guaspari.[44] He also had supporting roles in the teen comedyShe's All That, which grossed over $100 million worldwide against a production budget of $7–10 million,[45] andLasse Hallström's dramaThe Cider House Rules, which grossed over $88 million worldwide.[46] Culkin returned to the stage in 2000 withThe Moment When, an off-Broadway romantic comedy play byJames Lapine that explored the lives of New York City'sarts-and-lits set.[47] During a performance, he got his co-starsArija Bareikis,Mark Ruffalo andPhyllis Newmanhigh by swapping a propjoint for a real one.[48][49]

Culkin starred in his first regular role in a television series with the short-livedNBCsitcomGo Fish (2001).[50] He appeared in twofeature directorial debuts the following year:Peter Care'sThe Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys as a mischievous Catholic schoolboy andBurr Steers'sIgby Goes Down as the rebellious and sardonic teenager Jason "Igby" Slocumb Jr.[51][52] Film criticStephen Holden forThe New York Times praised both comedy-dramas,[53] but found Culkin'sbreakthrough performance in the latter to be "even richer" than the former.[54] For his work onIgby Goes Down, Culkin won theCritics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Actor/Actress and was nominated for theGolden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.[55][56]

2003–2017: Screen hiatus and theatre work

[edit]

Igby Goes Down was the first gig that profoundly impacted Culkin's personal life.[57] He realized in the midst of the film's success that acting had become his career, which was "terrifying" because he was never granted the decision to pursue it.[58] As he needed time to figure out whether he genuinely wanted to be an actor or not, he took a break from the film and television industries and only focused on the acting jobs that interested him the most.[58]

Culkin mostly gravitated towards theatre during his hiatus, starting as a replacement forJake Gyllenhaal inKenneth Lonergan'sWest End production ofThis Is Our Youth (2002–2003) at theGarrick Theatre.[59] The "dream play" was the second gig that deeply affected Culkin, as he spent eight years convincing Lonergan to let him play the co-lead role of Warren Straub.[57] ForGina Gionfriddo'sAfter Ashley (2005) at theVineyard Theatre, he played a young man growing up in a dysfunctional family.[60] The role won him anObie Award for Distinguished Performance.[61] In 2006, Culkin starred inEric Bogosian's off-Broadway revival ofSubUrbia,[62] and made hison-Broadway debut by appearing inJulia Cho'sone-act playFirst Tree in Antarctica.[63][64] He reunited with Lonergan forThe Starry Messenger (2009), a cosmic drama, at theAcorn Theatre.[65] Culkin headlined multiple revival runs ofThis Is Our Youth as Dennis Ziegler for theSydney Opera House,[66] theSteppenwolf Theatre Company,[67] and theCort Theatre.[21]

Culkin made his intermittent return to the screen withDerick Martini'sLymelife (2008), a teen comedy film, executive-produced byMartin Scorsese.[68] His next release wasKieran and Michele Mulroney's comedy-dramaPaper Man (2009), which disappointed critics.[69] InEdgar Wright's action comedyScott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), Culkin portrayed the titular character's "coolgay roommate"Wallace Wells.[70] He was frequently described by critics as one of the film'sscene stealers, although itbombed at the box office.[71][72] Culkin played a small role in Lonergan's psychological dramaMargaret (2011),[73] before starring in the critically panned comediesMovie 43 (2013) andQuitters (2015).[74][75] On television, he had a guest role in thesecond season of the crime drama seriesFargo (2015).[76] The following year, he starred in theensemble cast ofTodd Solondz's anthology filmWiener-Dog (2016).[77] Culkin recalled feeling comfortable with acting while he was filming the science fiction comedyInfinity Baby (2017), and began settling into it being something he would do for a living.[78]

2018–present:Succession and expansion

[edit]

From 2018 to 2023, Culkin received renewed recognition from mainstream audiences for his lead role asRoman Roy, an immature and irresponsible media executive, in theHBO black comedy-drama seriesSuccession.[79] He credits the series with solidifying his desire to be an actor.[78] Culkin's performance, especially in thefinal season, earned critical acclaim and numerous accolades,[80] including thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series,[81] theGolden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama,[82] twoCritics' Choice Television Awards,[83] and twoScreen Actors Guild Awards.[84]

Set during theCOVID-19 pandemic, Culkin reunited with theFather of the Bride cast for itslegacy-sequel short film (2020).[85] He played a supporting role inSteven Soderbergh's crime thrillerNo Sudden Move (2021),[86] and hosted theNovember 6, 2021 episode of the variety seriesSaturday Night Live; marking thirty years since his brother Macaulay anchored.[87] In 2022, Culkin narrated the documentary miniseriesGaming Wall Street and joined theadult animated sitcomSolar Opposites as a recurring character.[88][89] He returned to his role as Wallace Wells for theanime seriesScott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023).[90]

The2024 Sundance Film Festival marked the release ofJesse Eisenberg's buddy comedy filmA Real Pain, Culkin's first major project post-Succession.[91] He played Benjamin "Benji" Kaplan, a free-spirited and mentally unstable drifter who travels to Poland with his cousin David (played by Eisenberg) to honor their late grandmother and connect with their Polish-Jewish heritage.[92] Culkin's performance was highly praised by critics.Owen Gleiberman ofVariety called it a "sensational piece of acting",[93] whileThe Washington Post'sTy Burr found it "both liberating and touched by a deeper, more inarticulate sadness".[94] Culkin earnedseveral accolades for his work, including theAcademy Award,[95] theBAFTA Award,[96] theGolden Globe Award,[97] and theScreen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor.[98]

In 2025, Culkin returned to the stage asRichard Roma inPatrick Marber'sBroadway revival ofGlengarry Glen Ross, oppositeBob Odenkirk andBill Burr.[99] Culkin's performance polarized theater critics,[100] with some opining that he was miscast.[101][102] Next, Culkin will portraySquealer inAndy Serkis'animated film adaptation ofAnimal Farm,[103] andCaesar Flickerman inFrancis Lawrence'sThe Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026).[104]

Reception and artistry

[edit]

The truth is, [Culkin] is one of my most favorite scene partners I've had in the seven years of working onSuccession. While he and I clash on some levels and have not always seen eye to eye, I count him as a brother in arms.

Jeremy Strong on Culkin[105]

Culkin's approach to acting is based on "bringing life to someone else, but also realizing that person is somewhere inside you."[106] He is known for his "versatile and dynamic" performances, which often blends "impeccable" comedic timing with "surprising" depth and complexity.[107] Alex Moreland ofNational World believed that Culkin's performance in thepenultimate episode ofSuccession was the crowning moment of his career, "a remarkable achievement for the actor that stands head and shoulders above all the other remarkable achievements he's made so far on the show."[108]

Succession encouraged its actors toimprovise, which Culkin disliked at first due to being theatrically trained.[105][109] He soon developed afree-associative style of acting in which he learned his lines shortly before delivering them, declined to stand on his marker, and frequently experimented with the temperature of his performance.[110][15] Such techniques have been referred to as a form of improvisation, but he prefers to call itblagging because he believes that improv must have a "certain feel" to it.[110] Culkin's methods contrasted with his co-starJeremy Strong'slabor-intensive acting style,[111] but Strong's process was not intrusive upon his own.[112] "Some actors—me—need a certain amount of doggedness and labor and hyper-focus to get there," Strong explained toThe Times. "[Culkin] just is there. There’s no sweat equity, and he is unburdened by analysis. [Culkin] has an incredibly agile mind, but, what’s more, he is as open and as present an actor as I’ve ever encountered. It makes working with him an experience oftouching the third rail, which is what you want."[105]

Public image

Culkin has a complicated relationship withcelebrity culture, having been exposed to his brother Macaulay's fame at a young age.[113] He mistrustedmainstream media outlets following the release ofHome Alone because of how the press treated his family.[114] During his parents' separation and subsequent custody battle in 1995, a 13-year-old Culkin delivered a handwritten note to theNew York Supreme Court requesting to bar the media from entering the courtroom. His plea to "spare [his] family from any further embarrassment" was denied by a judge.[2] As of 2023[update], Culkin refuses to speak toAccess Hollywood and theNew York Post due to their respective coverage of his family.[2][115]

Journalists have written about Culkin's charismatic and "chaotic" personality.[116][15]The Daily Telegraph's Teo van den Broeke called him "Hollywood's most likeable rascal",[117] while Charlotte Edwardes ofThe Guardian dubbed him aManic Pixie Dream Guy.[118] His awards acceptance speeches attracted significant media attention,[119][120] especially pertaining to anin-joke with his wife about wanting more children.[121][122] Culkin has also been labeled as a style icon,[123] with his incorporation ofaccessories listed as his trademark feature.[124] Fashion critics noticed his recurring motif of wearing an assortment ofrings, nail polishes andfriendship bracelets on his right arm,[117] drawing comparisons to musiciansLenny Kravitz andTaylor Swift.[124][125] In March 2023, Culkin starred inCOS' spring–summer campaign and became abrand ambassador forZegna.[126][127] He also developed a creative partnership withDior.[128][129]

Culkin became friends with singerMichael Jackson around the timeHome Alone was released.[141] He frequently visited his residence,Neverland Ranch, with his siblings.[141] During the 2003 television programLiving with Michael Jackson, the singer defended his practice of inviting children into his bedroom by telling British journalistMartin Bashir that "many children," including Culkin, had slept in the same bed as him.[142] The program triggered an investigation and Jackson was formally charged with seven counts ofchild molestation;[143] he was lateracquitted in a court of law in 2005.[144] Culkin declined to speak about his relationship with Jackson in the wake of the documentary filmLeaving Neverland (2019), due to its sensitive nature.[145]
