Kew Railway Bridge spans theRiver Thames inLondon,England, betweenKew andStrand-on-the-Green,Chiswick. The bridge was opened in 1869.[1]
The bridge, which was givenGrade II listed structure protection in 1983,[1] was designed byW. R. Galbraith[2] and built byBrassey & Ogilvie for theLondon and South Western Railway. The bridge is part of an extension to the latter company's railway line fromActon Junction toRichmond.
In 1964, the north arch under Kew Railway Bridge was acquired byStrand on the Green Sailing Club, and was rented from British Rail and then from Network Rail.
It consists of fivewrought ironlattice girder spans of 35 metres each. Thecast ironpiers are decorated in three stages. During theSecond World War apillbox was built to guard it on the south end, along with an open enclosure to fire ananti-tank gun from.
The bridge carries two tracks which are electrified with boththird rail andLondon Underground-stylefourth rail. It is now owned byNetwork Rail and used byLondon Overground forMildmay line passenger trains running betweenRichmond andStratford. The same tracks are also used by London Underground'sDistrict line trains running between Richmond andUpminster.
InThe Dalek Invasion of Earth, a 1964 serial from theBBC'sDoctor Who, theTARDIS materialises under the bridge; it is trapped when the bridge collapses.[3]
A District line train can be seen crossing the bridge in the 1965 filmFour in the Morning.[citation needed]
