Kelly Deshawn McCarty (born August 24, 1975) is a naturalized Russian[1][2][3] former professionalbasketball player who is currently an assistant coach for theIowa Wolves of theNBA G League. He represented the senior men'sRussian national basketball team internationally. At 2.01 m (6 ft 7 in) 235 pounds (107 kg), he played at both theshooting guard andsmall forward positions. His primary position was small forward.
Born inChicago, McCarty played high school basketball at Quitman High School, inQuitman, Mississippi.
McCarty playedcollege basketball at theUniversity of Southern Mississippi, with theSouthern Miss Golden Eagles, leading the college team in scoring and rebounding during his senior year, in 1997–98.
After playing in just 2 regular season games for theDenver Nuggets of theNBA in 1999, McCarty went on to play in Israel, spending 5 seasons there - at first withMaccabi Raanana. He then signed with theIsraeli Premier League clubHapoel Jerusalem, and with them he won theULEB Cup (now calledEuroCup) in the 2003–04 season, being voted theEuroCup Finals MVP.
The next year, in the 2004–05 season, he moved to theRussian Super League A clubDynamo Saint Petersburg, and without losing a single game in theFIBA Europe League competition, his team won the championship, and he was electedthe Final Four MVP of that tournament. He spent the last years of his career playing in Russia.
McCarty also played for the senior men'sRussian national basketball team atEuroBasket 2009.[4]
On November 9, 2023, McCarty joined tneIowa Wolves as an assistant coach.[5]
