Keith Gerald Lee II (born November 8, 1984) is an Americanprofessional wrestler. He is signed toAll Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he is a formerAEW World Tag Team Champion. He is on hiatus due to an undisclosed injury. He is also known for his time inWWE andRing of Honor (ROH), as well as on theindependent circuit, in promotions such asEvolve,All American Wrestling (AAW), andPro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), where he held thePWG World Championship.

Lee signed with WWE in May 2018 and was assigned to the developmental brand,NXT, where he won theNXT Championship andNXT North American Championship, and became the first person to hold both titles simultaneously. Lee began appearing on theRaw brand in August 2020, where he facedAJ Styles andDrew McIntyre inWWE Championship matches. Lee left WWE in November 2021, debuting in AEW the following February and winning theAEW World Tag Team Championship later that year.

Early life

Lee was born Keith Gerald Lee II on November 8, 1984,[3] inWichita Falls, Texas.[5] He was introduced toprofessional wrestling at a young age by his grandmother, who was a fan herself, and credits her with inspiring him to pursue a career in professional wrestling. Lee playedcollege football atTexas A&M University, but quit to become a professional wrestler.[6][7]

Professional wrestling career

Early career (2005–2015)

Lee was trained byTim Brooks and debuted on theindependent circuit in 2005 under the ring name "Kevin Paine". In 2008, he began wrestling under his birth name. For the first 10 years of his career, Lee wrestled almost exclusively in his home state of Texas, appearing with promotions such as Professional Championship Wrestling (Arlington); Xtreme Championship Wrestling (Denton); North American Wrestling Allegiance (Waxahachie); Metroplex Wrestling (Bedford); and River City Wrestling (San Antonio).[8] During this time, Lee won the North American Wrestling Allegiance Tag Team Championship with Li Fang and the Xtreme Championship Wrestling Heavyweight Championship and TNT Championship.[9][10][11] Beginning in 2015, Lee began wrestling more frequently outside of Texas.[8]

Ring of Honor (2015–2017)

During 2015, Lee started making appearances inRing of Honor (ROH) withShane Taylor, calling themselves "Pretty Boy Killers" (PBK).[12] On August 27, 2016, duringField of Honor, PBK participated in agauntlet tag team match for theROH World Tag Team Championship, but the match was won byThe Addiction (Christopher Daniels andFrankie Kazarian).[13] AtAll Star Extravaganza VIII, PBK wrestled against theAll Night Express (Rhett Titus andKenny King),War Machine (Hanson andRaymond Rowe) and the team ofColt Cabana andDalton Castle in aFour Corner Survival match to determine the number one contender for the ROH tag team championship, in a losing effort.[14] In January 2017, Taylor announced that he had signed his first contract with Ring of Honor.[15] At a January 14 show in Atlanta, PBK entered into a feud with theBriscoe Brothers when Lee and Taylor attacked them and slammedJay Briscoe through a table. Surprisingly, the next day, Lee announced that he was leaving ROH.[16] On February 3, 2017, they faced the Briscoe Brothers, where the match ended in a no contest. This was Lee's last appearance in ROH until 2022.[17]

Evolve (2017–2018)

Lee signed withEvolve in January 2017, and made his debut atEvolve 76, losing toChris Hero.[18] He made his return on February 24 atEvolve 78, defeatingZack Sabre Jr.[19] The following night, atEvolve 79, he defeatedTracy Williams.[20] Lee received his first championship opportunity atEvolve 87 on June 25, when he unsuccessfully challengedMatt Riddle for theWWN Championship.[21] On October 14, atEvolve 94, Lee defeated Riddle to win theWWN Championship.[22] On April 6, 2018, atEvolve 103, he lost the title toAustin Theory.[23]

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (2017–2018)

Lee made hisPro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) debut on March 18, 2017, at the Nice Boys (Don't Play Rock N' Roll) event, competing in a triple threat match againstBrian Cage andSami Callihan, won by Cage.[24] At the Game Over, Man event, he lost toJeff Cobb.[25] On May 19 at Head Like A Cole, he won his first match in PWG, defeatingTrevor Lee.[26] He followed this up by defeatingLio Rush andTrent at Pushin Forward Back on July 7.[27] In September, Lee made it to the finals of the2017 Battle of Los Angeles, where he was defeated byRicochet.[28] At Time Is a Flat Circle on March 23, 2018, Lee defeatedChuck Taylor to become thePWG World Champion.[29] On April 21 at All Star Weekend 14, Lee lost the title toWalter in a three-way match, also involvingJonah Rock.[30]

WWE (2018–2021)

NXT (2018–2020)

Prior to officially signing withWWE, Lee received a tryout in 2008, although this did not result in him being hired.[31] He appeared as anextra on the March 30, 2009 episode ofRaw, playing a security guard.[32][33] On April 5, 2018, duringWrestleMania Axxess weekend, Lee made an appearance forNXT, defeatingKassius Ohno.[34] On May 1, it was announced that Lee had signed a contract with WWE.[35] Lee appeared in attendance forNXT TakeOver: Chicago II on June 16.[36] On the August 8 episode ofNXT, Lee made his televised in-ring debut for WWE, defeatingMarcel Barthel.[37] Throughout the rest of 2018, Lee wrestled sporadically onNXT, defeating the likes ofLuke Menzies,[38]Kona Reeves,[39] but losing toLars Sullivan.[40]

On March 7, 2019, Lee suffered an undisclosed injury. The injury resulted in an early end to his planned feud withDominik Dijakovic, who he was supposed to face for the next two months. Lee returned to action on April 18, at ahouse show inLakeland, Florida.[41] On November 1, Lee was among the NXT wrestlers who invaded that night's episode ofSmackDown.[42][43] AtNXT TakeOver: WarGames on November 23, Lee was included inTommaso Ciampa's team as they defeatedThe Undisputed Era (Adam Cole,Bobby Fish,Kyle O'Reilly andRoderick Strong) in aWarGames match.[44] The next night, he made up part of Team NXT at theSurvivor Series pay-per-view, where they faced TeamSmackDown and TeamRaw in a 5-on-5-on-5Survivor Series match, which Team SmackDown won, even though he was the last Competitor for Team NXT to get eliminated by SmackDown'sRoman Reigns.[45]

On the January 8, 2020 episode ofNXT, Lee won a fatal-four way match overCameron Grimes,Damian Priest, andDominik Dijakovic to become the number one contender to theNXT North American Championship,[46] and defeated Roderick Strong on the January 22 episode ofNXT to win the championship.[47] On January 26, Lee participated in theRoyal Rumble match at theRoyal Rumble pay-per-view, but was eliminated by theWWE ChampionBrock Lesnar.[48] Lee then successfully defended his title against Dominik Dijakovic atNXT TakeOver: Portland[49] and Johnny Gargano atTakeOver: In Your House.[50] During the second night ofThe Great American Bash on July 8, Lee defeatedAdam Cole to win theNXT Championship, becoming a double champion, and the first person to hold the NXT and North American Championships simultaneously.[51] On the July 22 episode ofNXT, Lee voluntarily relinquished the North American Championship,[52] and started a feud withKarrion Kross over the NXT Championship.[53][54] AtNXT TakeOver XXX on August 22, Lee lost the NXT Championship to Kross in what would be his final match in NXT.[55]

Raw (2020–2022)

AtSummerSlam, it was announced by WWE that Lee would be moving to the Raw brand and make his debut the following day's episode ofRaw.[56] Lee made his main roster debut on the August 24 episode ofRaw, where he facedRandy Orton and lost viadisqualification thanks to interference fromWWE ChampionDrew McIntyre.[57] A rematch between Lee and Orton was made for thePayback pay-per-view, in which Lee won.[58] AtSurvivor Series on November 22, Lee made up part of Team Raw as he teamed withBraun Strowman,AJ Styles,Riddle andSheamus to defeat Team Smackdown (Jey Uso,Kevin Owens,Seth Rollins,King Corbin andOtis) in a clean sweep.[59]

Lee would enter contention for the WWE Championship, participating in a triple threat match, where the winner would receive a WWE Championship match atTLC, but lost to Styles.[60] On the January 4, 2021 episode ofRaw, Lee unsuccessfully faced Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship.[61] The following month, Lee was scheduled to face Riddle andBobby Lashley for theUnited States Championship at theElimination Chamber event,[62] but was pulled from the event due to an injury.[63][64]

Lee was absent for five months due to aCOVID-19 diagnosis, followed by heart inflammation.[65] He returned on the July 19 episode ofRaw, accepting WWE Champion Bobby Lashley's open challenge match but was defeated.[66] During the following months, Lee began to work as Keith "Bearcat" Lee or Bearcat Lee (a homage toBearcat Wright) as part of a gimmick change,[67][68][69] but on November 4, Lee was released from his WWE contract.[70]

All Elite Wrestling / Return to ROH (2022–present)

Swerve In Our Glory (2022–2023)

Lee made a surprise debut withAll Elite Wrestling (AEW) On the February 9, 2022 episode ofDynamite, defeatingIsiah Kassidy to qualify for the "Face of the Revolution"ladder match atRevolution. The match was won byWardlow.[71]

In late-February 2022, Lee formed an alliance withSwerve Strickland, when Strickland came to Lee's aid after he was attacked byTeam Taz. The two began teaming as "Swerve in Our Glory".[72] AtFyter Fest in July 2023, Swerve In Our Glory defeated defending championsthe Young Bucks andTeam Taz in aTriple or Nothing tag team match to win theAEW World Tag Team Championship.[73] They successfully defended the titles against challengers including theLucha Brothers andPrivate Party.[74][75] They subsequently entered a three match series withThe Acclaimed, defeating them atAll Out,[76] losing the belts to them in a rematch on theSeptember 20 episode ofDynamite,[77] and losing to them once more atFull Gear in November 2022 after Strickland slapped Lee when Lee refused to use a pair of pliers as a weapon, causing Lee to walk out on the match.[78] In December 2022, Lee made his return toRing of Honor (ROH), now under the ownership ofTony Khan, for the first time in five years. AtFinal Battle, Swerve In Our Glory facedShane Taylor Promotions (Shane Taylor and JD Griffey). Towards the end of the match, Lee accidentally caughtSwerve Strickland, which led to Strickland walking out on him, but Lee took advantage of a miscue between Taylor and Griffey, andpowerbombed Griffey to win the match.[79] On the December 21 episode ofDynamite, Strickland formed a new stable,Mogul Affiliates, withParker Boudreaux, Granden Goetzman, andRick Ross. Mogul Affiliates attacked Lee, ending Swerve In Our Glory.[73][80]

Championship pursuits and hiatus (2023–present)

On the February 17, 2023 episode ofRampage, Lee savedDustin Rhodes from a post-match attack by Strickland and Boudreaux.[81] He then began an alliance with Rhodes, dubbing themselves "Naturally Limitless". In their first match as a tag team, they defeated Mogul Affiliates on the March 3 episode ofRampage,[82] and they continued to team together throughout the year. AtDouble or Nothing in May 2023, Lee participated in a 21-manblackjack battle royal for theAEW International Championship, where he eliminatedthe Blade, before attacking Strickland, which led toBrian Cage eliminating him.[83] In June 2023, Lee teamed withDarby Allin andOrange Cassidy and their allies, partnering them in victories overMogul Embassy and theJericho Appreciation Society.[84][85] Lee and Strickland were chosen in a blind eliminator tag team tournament, where on the July 5 episode ofDynamite, they were defeated by Allin and Cassidy.[86]

On the November 8, 2023 episode ofDynamite, Lee unsuccessfully challengedSamoa Joe for theROH World Television Championship, which was ended by referee's decision.[87] AtFinal Battle in December 2023, Lee defeated his former tag team partner Shane Taylor in a singles match.[88] Lee was scheduled to face off against Strickland in a match atWorlds End later that month, but he was withdrawn from the match due to an undisclosed injury. In January 2024, Lee reportedly underwent "double surgeries" and has been on hiatus since.[89][90]

Other media

Lee made his video game debut as a playable character inWWE 2K20[91] and appears inWWE 2K22. Also, he appears inAEW Fight Forever asDLC.

Personal life

Lee married fellow professional wrestlerMia Yim in February 2022.[92]

In 2020, during theSpeaking Out movement, Lee alleged that a woman had spiked his drink and sexually assaulted him in 2016.[93]
