Kawardha State (Hindi:कावर्धा) was one of theprincely states in theCentral Provinces ofIndia during the period of theBritish Raj.[1] The capital of the state wasKawardha town, inKabirdham district ofChhattisgarh state.Rajgond Dyansty ruled.TheBhoramdeo Temple is located less than 20 km to the west of the main town.
Kawardha State was founded in 1751. According to legend, its name would have originated inKabirdham,Kabir's see, the current name of the district. In former times, manyKabir panth adherents resided in the town. The kawardha rulers Belong toRaj Gond Nagvanshi Kshatriya dynasty.[2] Kawardha State's last ruler, Thakur Lal Dharamraj Singh, signed the accession to theIndian Union on 1 January 1948, so the state territory was merged intoBombay State, following its splits first assigned toMadhya Pradesh, finally toChhattisgarh.
The rulers of the princely state of Kawardha bore the titleThakur.[3]
