Kaugachhi is acensus town inBarrackpore I CD Block inBarrackpore subdivision[1] inNorth 24 Parganas district in theIndianstate ofWest Bengal.

Population

As per2011 Census of India Kaugachhi had a total population of 17,001, of which 8,612 (51%) were males and 8,389 (49%) were females. Population below 6 years was 1,379. The total number of literates in Kaugachhi was 13,833 (88.55% of the population over 6 years).[2]

As of 2001[update] Indiacensus,[3] Kaugachhi had a population of 13,904. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kaugachhi has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 67%. In Kaugachhi, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Location

Garshyamnagar,Noapara, Kaugachhi andPaltapara form an urban cluster east ofGarulia andNorth Barrackpur.Ichhapur Defence Estate lies on the west of North Barrackpur.[5]

96% of the population ofBarrackpore subdivision (partly presented in the map alongside) live in urban areas. In 2011, it had a density of population of 10,967 per km2 The subdivision has 16 municipalities and 24 census towns.[6]

Noapara police station underBarrackpore Police Commissionerate has jurisdiction overGarulia andNorth Barrackpur municipal areas.[7][8]

Post Office

Kowgachi has a non-delivery sub post office, withPIN 743127 in the North Presidency Division of North 24 Parganas district in Calcutta region. Other post offices with the same PIN are Paltapara, Shyamnagar, Mulajore, Feeder Road, Gurdah, Mondalpara and Purbabidhyadharpur.[9]

North 24 Parganas district has been identified as one of the areas where ground water is affected byarsenic contamination.[10]

Infrastructure

As per the District Census Handbook 2011, Kaugachhi covered an area of 1.83 km2. Amongst the medical facilities it had were 4 medicine shops. Amongst the educational facilities it had were 5 primary schools. The nearest other school facilities were available 2 km away at Gurdaha or 13 km away atNaihati.[11]

The nearest railway stations areShyamnagar railway station andIchhapur railway station on theSealdah-Ranaghat line.[13][12]
