Kattanam[1] is a village located the inAlappuzha district of theIndian state ofKerala. It is in the southern part of the country, 2,200 km south of the capitalNew Delhi.[2] Kattanam is about 7.2 Km east ofKayamkulam, 10 Km South ofMavelikkara and 22 Km West ofAdoor. Kattanam is located about 15 metres above sea level. Kattanam Junction is one of the main Junctions in theSH - 5 (Kayamkulam -Punalur Road).
Kattanam celebrates a lot of Cultural, Religious and Non-Religious festivals and programmes every year.[citation needed]
Kattanam is known for Saint Stephens Orthodox Syrian Church, a parish church under theDiocese of Mavelikkara of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The parish was established in 1835 and is the largest church in Kattanam, currently serving 8,000 members in over 1,200 families.[3]
Pope Pius XI Higher Secondary School[4] is one of the main educational institutions situated in Kattanam. Other institutions are Mahatma English Medium School,[5] St.Thomas Senior Secondary School,[6] CMS High School,[7] Model Public School.[8]
Many religious institutions are situated at Kattanam. The Vetticode Nagaraja Temple[9] is situated just 3 Km away from the Kattanam Junction.
The Orthodox Christian Church St. Stephen's Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church[10] also known as Kattanam Valiyapalli is situated at the heart of Kattanam.
