TheKatowice urban area (Polish:Konurbacja katowicka,pronounced[kɔnurˈbat͡sjakatɔˈvit͡ska]), also known as theUpper Silesian urban area (Konurbacja górnośląska,[kɔnurˈbat͡sjaɡurnɔˈɕlɔ̃ska]), is anurban area/conurbation in southernPoland, centered onKatowice. It is located in theSilesian Voivodeship. The Katowice urban area is the largest urban area in Poland and22nd largest urban area in the European Union. According toDemographia, its population is 1,903,000 (August 2023).[3]

In the years 2008–2017, theMetropolitan Association of Upper Silesia encompassed the 14cities with powiat rights of the urban area. In 2017, it was replaced by theMetropolis GZM, however, the latter includes a total of 41gminas of the widerKatowice metropolitan area, and doesn't includeJaworzno due to political reasons.

According toStatistics Poland, the Katowice urban area consists of 19 bordering cities in theSilesian Voivodeship:Będzin,Bytom,Chorzów,Czeladź,Dąbrowa Górnicza,Gliwice,Jaworzno,Katowice,Knurów,Mikołów,Mysłowice,Piekary Śląskie,Ruda Śląska,Siemianowice Śląskie,Świętochłowice,Sosnowiec,Tychy,Tarnowskie Góry, andZabrze.[1]
