Katibah Nusantara orKN (Jawi:كتيبه نوسنتارا,See RfDtransl.Katibah Archipelago), also known asKatibah Nusantara Lid Daulah Islamiyyah,Malay archipelago unit for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria andMajmu'ah al Arkhabiliy, is aSoutheast Asian Jihadist Militant organization part of theIslamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), composed ofMalay-speaking individuals, mostly fromIndonesia andMalaysia, but also from thePhilippines andSingapore. They received international attention for being the perpetrators of the2016 Jakarta attacks. It is made up of about 30 smallcells.

Listed as terror organisation byMalaysia.[1]

History

Katibah Nusantara was formally launched on 26 September 2014, headquartered inAl-Shaddadi, in theSyrian province ofHasakah. Its training ground is located inPoso,IndonesiaIn early April 2015, the unit achieved its first major combat success by capturing fiveKurdish-held territories inSyria, speculating that the unit's main area of operations was still in Syria, before the 2016 Jakarta attacks.

Leadership

The unit's first known Amir, or leader, isAbu Ibrahim al-Indunisiy. As of 2016[update], it is unknown whether he is still leader, but it is alleged that eitherBahrun Naim, mastermind of the 2016 Jakarta attacks, orBahrum Syah took over leadership.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
