Katharine Ellis,FBA, MAE is a Britishmusicologist and academic, specialising inmusic history. Since 2017, she has been the1684 Professor of Music at theUniversity of Cambridge. She previously taught at theOpen University, atRoyal Holloway, University of London and at theSchool of Advanced Study, University of London, before serving asStanley Hugh Badock Professor of Music at theUniversity of Bristol (2013–2017).
Ellis studied atUniversity College, Oxford, graduating with Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degrees.[1] She also studied the violin at theGuildhall School of Music.[2] Her DPhil was awarded in 1991 for adoctoral thesis titled "La revue et gazette musicale de Paris, 1834-1880: the state of music criticism in mid nineteenth-century France".[3]
Ellis's first post in her academic career was as ajunior research fellow in French studies atSt Anne's College, Oxford[1] Then, from 1991 to 1994, she lectured with theOpen University.[1][4] In 1994, she joinedRoyal Holloway, University of London as a lecturer.[1] She was additionally the inaugural Director of theInstitute of Musical Research, which was then based at theSchool of Advanced Study, University of London, between February 2006 and July 2009.[2][5][6][7]
In 2013, Ellis joined theUniversity of Bristol as its nextStanley Hugh Badock Professor of Music.[1][8] She gave her inaugural lecture on 13 February 2014.[9] In August 2016, it was announced that she would be the next1684 Professor of Music at theUniversity of Cambridge, in succession toNicholas Cook.[5] She took up the chair in June 2017,[1] and was also elected aFellow ofSelwyn College, Cambridge.[10]
Ellis's research centres on thecultural historyof music inFrance in the long nineteenth century.[4][11] She also has interests in musical tastes and practices, women's musical careers,music criticism, and music in fiction.[2][4][5][11]
In 2010, Ellis was elected aMember of the Academia Europaea.[12] In 2013, she was elected aFellow of the British Academy (FBA), the United Kingdom'snational academy for the humanities and social sciences.[11] Ellis was elected in 2017 to theAmerican Philosophical Society.[13]
