Baba Kartik Oraon (29 October 1924 – 8 December 1981)[1] was anIndian politician and anAdivasi leader[2] from theIndian National Congress. He also participated in theIndian freedom movement of 1947. Oraon founded theAkhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad organisation.[3]
Oraon was born in a village named Karounda Littatoli inGumla district,Jharkhandstate, India, into theKurukh community.[4] His was the fourth child of his father, Jaira Oraon, and mother, Birsi Oraon. He was named Kartik because he was born in the month ofKartik of theHindu calendar.[3]
After completing high school inGumla in 1942, Oraon passed Intermediate examination from Science College,Patna, and completed a bachelor of engineering degree fromBihar College of Engineering, Patna. He continued his studies and acquired a number of qualifications from institutions in the United Kingdom.[5] He was considered one of the most educated men of the Kurukh community for his foreign education and his use of theOraon Sadri andKurukh languages.[6]
Oraon held several official positions and represented Lohardaga constituency in theParliament of India several times. He was minister for aviation and communication of theGovernment of India. He died inNew Delhi on 8 December 1981.[7] He was three times amember of parliament in the Lok Sabha from theLohardaga constituency. He was also known by the name ofBaba Kartik Saheb.[8]
