
Karl Ludwig Edler von Littrow (18 July 1811 – 16 November 1877) was anAustrianastronomer.
Born inKazan,Russian Empire, he was the son of astronomerJoseph Johann Littrow. He studied mathematics and astronomy at the universities ofVienna andBerlin, receiving his doctorate at theUniversity of Krakow in 1832. In 1842 he succeeded his father as director of theVienna Observatory. Under his leadership, construction of a new observatory began inWähring in 1872; he died, however, prior to its completion.[1] He was the husband ofAuguste von Littrow and the father ofOtto von Littrow.
He died inVenice, Italy.
He is the great-great-grandfather of Roman Catholic CardinalChristoph Schönborn.
He made contributions to a new edition ofJohann Samuel Traugott Gehler'sPhysikalisches wörterbunch.[2]
