Karl-Heinz Narjes in 1973

Karl-Heinz Narjes (30 January 1924 – 26 January 2015) was a GermanChristian Democratic (CDU) politician. From 1969 to 1973 he was Minister for Economy and Transport of the State ofSchleswig-Holstein and from 1981 to 1988 he was aEuropean Commissioner.

DuringWorld War II, Narjes was a soldier inKriegsmarine serving on a submarineU-91 with the rank ofLeutnant zur See. After the submarine was sunk by theBritish Navy on 26 February 1944 eastwards of theAzores, Narjes became a prisoner of war of Britain.[1]

From 1971 to January 1973, Narjes was a member of theLandtag of Schleswig-Holstein, i.e. the state parliament.[2] From 1972 to 1981, he was a member of theBundestag.[2]

In the 1985–1988Delors Commission, he was aVice-President of the Commission and Commission forIndustry,information technology andscience and research.
