Kari Skogland is aCanadian filmmaker.[1][2] In 2016, she co-founded independent production company Mad Rabbit.[3] Her most recent project isThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a television series forMarvel Studios.
Skogland started as aneditor.[4] Then she moved on to directing, starting with award-winningtelevision commercials andmusic videos.[5] Then she became a director of television shows, beginning with an episode of 1994'sDead at 21 and five episodes of 1996'sTraders.[6]Traders was nominated for severalGeminis including Best Director, and wonBest Series.[7]
Her first film,The Size of Watermelons, won the Silver Award at WorldFest Houston. HerCBC filmWhite Lies was nominated for several Geminis and anInternational Emmy and won a Tout Ecran. She also directed50 Dead Men WalkingstarringSir Ben Kingsley,Jim Sturgess andRose McGowan in March 2009.[8] She directed episodes ofBoardwalk Empire,The Borgias and in 2014 the miniseriesSons of Liberty[9] and episodes of theHistory Channel'sVikings. In 2017 and 2018, she directed several memorable episodes ofHulu's original series,The Handmaid's Tale, including the Season 1 finale.[10] She described her process for directing the show as, "Communication, curiosity and being open to an outcome that is different from what I have planned."[11]
Skogland has spoken out about theglass ceiling for women directors in the film industry.[11] Speaking about the production ofThe Handmaid's Tale in 2018, she said, "People say they can’t find female directors, but the reason for that is there’s no access, no entry point. They don’t appear overnight—you have to create a space where they can grow and be discovered."[12]
In 2021, Skogland was announced as the new director for the upcomingCleopatra biopic starringGal Gadot, replacingPatty Jenkins who will still produce the film.[13] In November 2022, Skogland signed on to directWind River: The Next Chapter.[14]
Born inOttawa, Ontario, Canada, Kari Skogland is married to film editor Jim Munro. They met circa 1979 when Skogland applied to be Munro's assistant, which led to Skogland getting the job and the two also starting a personal relationship. They have two daughters, MacKenzie and Aislin.[15][16]
