Karak (Pashto: کرك,Urdu:کرکpronounceⓘ) is the headquarters ofKarak District in theKhyber Pakhtunkhwa province ofPakistan. It is 123 km fromPeshawar on the mainIndus Highway between Peshawar andKarachi. It is located at 33°7'12N 71°5'41E.[2] Karak is said to be the single district in Pakistan that is inhabited by only one tribe ofPashtuns — theKhattaks.
Karak is a fast-growing city with just over 50,000 people. It is the second-largest city inKohat Division and the namesake and only urbanized area ofKarak District. Karak's population nearly doubled between 1998 and 2017.[1] The dominant language in the city isPashto, which nearly everybody speaks. The city was first labeled an urban area between the 1972 and 1981 Pakistan censuses.[3]
