Kanjirankulam Bird Sanctuary is a 1.04 km2 (0.40 sq mi)Protected area nearMudukulathurRamanathapuram District,Tamil Nadu.India, declared in 1989.9°20′N78°29′E / 9.333°N 78.483°E /9.333; 78.483. It is adjacent toChitrangudi Bird Sanctuary. It is notable as a nesting site for several migratoryheron species that roost in the prominent growth ofbabul trees there. International name: Chitragudi and Kanjirankulam Bird Sanctuary,IBA Code: IN261, Criteria: A1, A4i.[2] The sanctuary has been designated as a protectedRamsar site since 2022.[1]
The sanctuary vegetation is mostlytropical dry deciduous forest. It is dominated by babul along withProsopis juliflora and the grassesBermuda grass andEremopogon foveolatus. TheinvasiveProsopis is slowly encroaching on much of the sanctuary area, retarding growth ofbabuls. Theirrigation tankbund and the area outside the tank havetamarind trees,fig trees,neem trees,portia trees,silk trees (Albizzia amara),drumstick trees (Tamil: murungai, முருங்கை), andpalmyra palms.[citation needed]
The breeding population ofmigratory waterbirds arrive here between October and February and include:painted stork,white ibis,black ibis,little egret,great egret.[citation needed]
The sanctuary can be reached by road from Mudukulathur 8 km andMadurai 117 km. The nearest railway isParamakudi 15 km and the nearest airport isMadurai.
Accommodation is available at PWD Rest House at Mudukalathur 7 km, the Forest Rest House atSayalgudi – 30 km and Paramakudi.[3]
