Etymology

[edit]

The place was originally written under theGangas and later under theCholas, who administered it as a part of an area namedKilalainad. Later, theHoysalas made it a major headquarters of a province (sime) and its name was changed to Kanakapura from its originalKanakanahalli. However, earlier mentions refer to the city asKanikaranahalli in two Hoysala records dated 1319 and 1317 A.D. from Hachchalu and Nyakanahalli (Kanakapura tq) villages respectively. A more recent record dated 1662 A.D. byMysore rulers fromMalagala also mention the place asKanikaranahalli being the headquarters of asime. The local inhabitants universally call it asKanikaranahalli, which is otherwise corrupted asKankanahalli, according to Buchanan[who?]. He further claims thatKanikaranahalli has aKannada origin, in whichKani andKarna orKanikara signifies showing sympathy.
