Kalyani Expressway is a 44.17-kilometre-long (27.45 mi), 6 laned, tolledexpressway in the state ofWest Bengal,India. It connectsKolkata with its satellite cityKalyani and declared as an expressway byGovernment of West Bengal.[1] The road starts fromBelghoria Expressway inNimta More, Kolkata and ends inBansberia ofHooghly district. The maincarriageway has 6 lanes (except some low traffic areas where it has 4 lanes) and along with 2service lanes each side.[2] The road is developed byWest Bengal Highway Development Corporation.[3]

Route

[edit]

The road serves as a faster connection betweenKolkata and its northern suburbs in theKolkata metropolitan region, includingSodepur,Barrackpore,Naihati,Kanchrapara andKalyani. The road acts an alternative to theBarrackpore Trunk Road and significantly brought down the communication time between the cities from 2 hours to 40 minutes. The road has important interchanges withfeeder roads to all the northern suburbs likeBelgharia,Sodepur,Barasat,Madhyamgram,Barrackpore,Shyamnagar,Naihati andKanchrapara, apart from roads which connects other small towns and localities on the way. The road has interchanges withState Highway 1 andState Highway 2 at different places. An extension of this expressway from 'Kampa More' connects it toNational Highway 12 through a 6-kilometer-long,6-lane elevated corridor. Additionally, a 6-lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge named 'Second Ishwar Gupta Setu' is being built on the expressway betweenKalyani andBansberia over theHooghly River, which will be the 5th bridge over theHooghly River in theKolkata metropolitan region.
