Kafr Ram (Arabic:كفرام, also spelledKfar Ram orKafram) is a town in westernSyria administratively part of theHoms Governorate, and it is inWadi Al Nasara ("Valley of the Christians"). It is located 50 kilometers northwest ofHoms in theTaldou Subidistrict.[1]
The name of the town isAramaic in origin, withKafr meaning "small Town" or "the spot", andRam meaning "mountain".[1] In the northern part of the village is the small, historic church of al-Qasr.[1] The first primary school in the village was founded around 1935.[1] Among Kafr Ram's water sources are several springs, the largest of which is known as 'Ayn al-Hamra.[1]
Kafr Ram is in Wadi Al Nasara in the west of Homs, situated along the northern foothills of the Dahr al-Qasir Mountain with an elevation ranging from 850 to 1,150 meters above sea level.[1] Nearby localities includeBarshin to the northwest,Khanazir andBishanin to the north,Kafr Kamrah andAkakir to the northeast,Fahil andRabah to the southeast,Bahhur to the south,Muqlus andHasour to the southwest andal-Bitar,Ish al-Shuhah andHadiyah to the west.
According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Kafr Ram had a population of 2,115 in the 2004 census.[2] As of 2015, the population was estimated to be roughly 4,000. Kafr Ram's inhabitants are predominantlyGreek Orthodox Christians, withGreek Catholic (Melkite) andTurkmen minorities.[3][1]
