KJMY (99.5FM) is acommercialradio stationlicensed toBountiful, Utah, and serving theSalt Lake City metropolitan area, includingOgden andProvo. The station is owned byiHeartMedia, Inc., and it broadcasts ahot adult contemporaryradio format, switching toChristmas music for much of November and December.[2] The station's studios are located inWest Valley City.
KJMY has aneffective radiated power (ERP) of 40,000watts. Itstransmitter is on Nelson Peak Road inWest Jordan.[3] KJMY broadcasts usingHD Radio technology. Itsdigital subchannel carriesbusiness news fromBloomberg Radio, which in turn feeds anFM translator at 99.1 MHz.
Theconstruction permit was assigned thecall signKBZE on February 22, 1988, while it was still an unbuilt station. KBZEsigned on the air on March 15, 1988; 37 years ago (1988-03-15).[4] It was owned by the Bountiful Broadcasting Company and it carried asmooth jazz format as "The Breeze."
On February 14, 1989, the station changed its call letters toKLVV. As "K-Love," the station carried anadult contemporary format.
On October 8, 1990, KLVV flipped toTop 40/CHR as "Q-99."[5]
On June 17, 1991, the station becameKUTQ with the name "Rock 99". As KUTQ, the station achieved its highest ratings with the afternoon showMick and Allen which later moved toKBER101.1 FM.
On September 6, 1996, the station becameKURR, and changed its format toclassic rock, keeping the "Rock 99" name.[6] In 1999, KURR was acquired byClear Channel Communications, the forerunner to today's iHeartMedia.[7]
After struggling in the ratings for many years, on November 4, 2004, the current call signKJMY was adopted. The station's format became hot adult contemporary.[8][9] KJMY became the only hot AC again in Salt Lake City following the reverting ofKBEE toadult contemporary inFebruary 2012. (KBEE later shifted back to Adult Top 40 in 2013.)
Since March 2010, KJMY's HD2digital subchannel has fed an analogFM translator station, K256AE (99.1), licensed to Salt Lake City. The station was initially branded as "Classic Country 99.1", and operated using aloophole in FCC translator regulations to broadcast an additional analog signal to the market. On September 15, 2011, KJMY-HD2 changed toclassic rock, branded as "Rock 99.1".[10]
On January 11, 2013, KJMY-HD2 changed toalternative rock, branded as "The Alternative Project".[11] On May 21, 2014, KJMY-HD2 changed its format tocountry music, branded as "Country 99.1".[12][13] On May 6, 2015, KJMY-HD2 was changed to a simulcast ofcontemporary hitsister stationKZHT97.1 FM.
On February 7, 2019, KJMY-HD2 changed tosoft adult contemporary, branded as "Easy 99.1".[14] On January 27, 2021, KJMY-HD2 flipped to business news fromBloomberg Radio, branded as "Business 99.1".[15]
