KIXZ (940kHz) is acommercialAMradio station inAmarillo, Texas, airing anews/talkformat. It is owned byTownsquare Media, with the license held by Townsquare License, LLC.[2] The studios are on SW 34th Avenue in Amarillo.

By day, KIXZ is powered at 5,000watts. But940 AM is aclear channel frequency reserved forClass A stationsXEQMexico City andCFNVMontreal. So to avoid interference, it reduces power at night to 1,000watts. It also uses adirectional antenna with a four-tower array. Thetransmitter is on South Whitaker Road near SE 85th Avenue in Amarillo.[3]

Weekdays mornings on KIXZ begin with a Texas-based hour of news and agriculture reports hosted by Chuck Martin. In afternoondrive time, Chad Hasty hosts a two-hour talk show shared with co-ownedKFYOLubbock. The rest of the weekday schedule isnationally syndicated shows:This Morning, America's First News with Gordon Deal,The Glenn Beck Radio Program,The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show,The Sean Hannity Show,The Mark Levin Show,The Michael Berry Show andCoast to Coast AM withGeorge Noory.

On weekends, KIXZ has specialty shows on money, health, cars, home repair, guns, technology and the law. Weekend syndicated programs includeThe Kim Komando Show,The Weekend with Michael Brown,Gun Talk with Tom Gresham,The Ben Ferguson Show andSunday Night with Bill Cunningham. Most hours begin with an update fromFox News Radio.

History

The stationsigned on the air in June 1947; 78 years ago (June 1947).[4] Thecall sign was KLYN and the power was 1,000 watts. It was owned by the Plains Empire Broadcasting Company with studios at 1014 West 7th Avenue. KLYN was anaffiliate of theCBS Radio Network, carrying its dramas, comedies, news, sports,soap operas,game shows andbig band broadcasts during the "Golden Age of Radio."

In the 1960s and 70s, KIXZ was aTop 40 station, playing contemporary hits for teens and 20-somethings. It competed withKPUR 1440 AM. But as contemporary music listening shifted to the FM dial in the 1990s, KIXZ switched toAdult Standards, using the "Music of Your Life" network.

KIXZ flipped toall-talk in late March 2003, during theIraq War. The station called itself "News/Talk 940." The initial lineup included Glenn Beck,Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Sean Hannity andMichael Savage.
