KIQI (1010AM) is acommercialradio station inSan Francisco, California. It is owned byMulticultural Broadcasting and airs aSpanish-languagetalkradio format. KIQI 1010 AM issimulcast onKATD990 AM in theSacramento Valley. Most shows are paidbrokered programming where the hosts purchase time on the station and may advertise their companies and services. KIQI and KATD carryOakland Athleticsbaseball games in Spanish.[3] The station'sstudios and offices are located near theCivic Center in San Francisco.

1010 AM is a Canadianclear-channel frequency, on whichCFRBToronto andCBRCalgary are theClass A dominant stations. KIQI broadcasts at 10,000watts but must use adirectional antenna at all times to protect those and other stations on 1010 AM. Thetransmitter is at theSan Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge toll plaza inOakland.[4]

History

This station first received itsFCCconstruction permit in 1950.[1] During construction, it was assigned thecall sign KPOO, and then KRUZ, before settling on KSAY on January 5, 1957.[5] In 1958, KSAYsigned on the air.[6] Originally the station was adaytimer, required to go off the air between sunset and sunrise. It was owned by the KSAY Broadcasting Company.

In 1974, KSAY was sold to Peninsula FM, a broadcast company headed by radio entrepreneurJames Gabbert, which also owned FM stationKIOI at the time of acquisition. Upon its closure, the station's call sign was changed to the currentKIQI, and flipped tooldies. By 1980, it switched to aSpanish language format withRegional Mexican music.

In 1993, KIQI begansimulcasting onKATD (990 AM) inPittsburg, California. Both stations were acquired byMulticultural Broadcasting in 2003. The company is based inNew York City and is headed by businessman Arthur Liu.
